Computercraft is seeking a creative and detail-oriented professional with exceptional communication and teaching skills to provide educational and technical support to users of molecular biology databases provided by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The successful candidate primarily will support NCBI’s Comparative Genomics Resource (CGR) and cloud outreach with a focus on eukaryotic genomics. The role will also include some user support and research activities.
NCBI recently began a new initiative to develop CGR, a consistently annotated, cloud-based resource for all eukaryotic research organisms that integrates gene and organism knowledge and provides a foundation for reliable comparative analysis. This modernization will be a multiyear effort and will support the needs of users engaged in data search and retrieval, gene annotation, evaluation of sequence quality, and comparative analyses. The new infrastructure, user interfaces, and tools should result in an improved experience for researchers, facilitate better data submissions, reach more users, support more research organisms, and ultimately drive biomedical discoveries that have the potential to improve human health.

NCBI provides free access to petabytes of biomedical and genomic information, and scientists all over the world use its products.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with NCBI staff to develop and deliver outreach presentations at NCBI events (such as workshops, webinars, and codeathons) and scientific conferences with a focus on genomics, bioinformatics, and cloud computing
- Assist NCBI product teams in establishing and prioritizing outreach goals and target audiences
- Work with NCBI communications staff to create marketing materials for the web, social media, and the NCBI Insights blog
- Collect and analyze customer feedback to support efforts to improve NCBI web and programmatic interfaces and create new marketing strategies
- Provide assistance to users of NCBI’s broad range of database services
Required Skills/Experience
- Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field
- Research experience with methods for sequencing and annotating eukaryotic genomes
- Familiarity with genomic sequencing and annotation software
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Teaching experience
- with UNIX/Linux and common scripting languages (e.g., Python, R)
- Strong desire to support public scientific databases
Desired Skills/Experience
- Experience with cloud computing (AWS, GCP), bioinformatics software packages, and GitHub.
