The Genomics Resource Center (GRC) at the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is recruiting for an Open Rank Bioinformatics Software Engineer, and is considering applicants for level one (I) or level two (II) positions.

Comprised of an inter-disciplinary, multi-department team of investigators, IGS uses the powerful tools of genomics and bioinformatics to understand genome function in health and disease, to study molecular and cellular networks in a variety of model systems, and to generate data and bioinformatics resources of value to the international scientific community.

The Genomics Resource Center (GRC) is a high-throughput laboratory and data analysis group supporting the scientific programs of IGS and its collaborators, both across the University of Maryland Baltimore campus and across the globe. Using multiple sequencing and analysis platforms, the GRC generates high-quality genomic data in a cost-effective manner. The bioinformatics group in the GRC includes researchers with expertise in genomic data management, genome assembly, genome analysis and annotation, comparative analysis, cancer genomics, and clinical genomics.

Benefits Information:

UMB offers a generous benefits package, which includes 22 vacation days, 14 floating and holidays, 15 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and retirement options; and tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any of the University System of Maryland schools.

UMB requires all faculty, staff, and students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.

Bioinformatics Software Engineer (BSE) I

The selected Bioinformatics Software Engineer I (BSEI) will work under the supervision of senior engineers to develop and maintain software that drives, interacts with, or extracts data from complex engineered systems. BSEs work to contribute to projects intended to develop software or design databases to accomplish specific scientific or analytical objectives. They will develop tools, protocols or structured methods for organizing or presenting data from analytical or experimental systems.

Primary Duties:

  • Under the supervision of senior engineers develop and maintain software that drives, interacts with, or extracts data from complex engineered systems, such as genomic sequencing systems. Contribute to projects intended to develop software or design database to accomplish specific scientific or analytical objective. Develop tools, protocols or structured methods for organizing or presenting data from analytical or diagnostic systems.
  • Maintain software based on the requirements specified by senior engineers and scientists.
  • Under the supervision of senior engineers, maintain analysis pipelines using the tools and systems available at Institute of Genome Science (IGS). This will include installing software and writing wrapper scripts to invoke the software to process data.
  • Manage genomics related data generated and maintained at IGS including loading and querying data from database systems, writing scripts to transform the data to necessary formats, and downloading and transforming genomic data maintained in public data repositories.
  • Ensures basic quality assurance of data and software generated by IGS.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

BSEs work to contribute to projects intended to develop software or design databases to accomplish specific scientific or analytical objectives. They will develop tools, protocols or structured methods for organizing or presenting data from analytical or experimental systems.

Primary Duties:

  • With minimal supervision of senior engineers develop and maintain software that drives, interacts with, or extracts data from complex engineered systems, such as genomic sequencing systems. Contribute to projects intended to develop software or design database to accomplish specific scientific or analytical objective. Develop tools, protocols or structured methods for organizing or presenting data from analytical or diagnostic systems.
  • Independently develop and maintain software based on the requirements specified by lead engineers, senior engineers and scientists.
  • Develop and maintain analysis pipelines using the tools and systems available at Institute of Genome Science (IGS). This will include installing software and writing wrapper scripts to invoke the software to process data.
  • Participate in multiple ongoing projects simultaneously and work as a member of a large-scale, multi-member project team.
  • Manage genomics related data generated and maintained at IGS including loading and querying data from database systems, writing scripts to transform the data to necessary formats, and downloading and transforming genomic data maintained in public data repositories.
  • Ensures basic quality assurance of data and software generated by IGS.
