The Research Bioinformatics Group at New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Scientist to work as part of a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and fast-paced team. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with bench and computational scientists to develop and apply novel bioinformatics methods and leverage all available tools and data resources to support and advance early-stage research and development projects at NEB.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support research teams by using state-of-the-art computational approaches. When necessary, develop and apply novel bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines to solve the needs and challenges specific to developing NGS methods and applications and enzyme discovery/engineering.
  • Collaborate with individuals and groups across the Research Department and beyond to design, analyze and interpret biological experiments.
  • Stay up to date with new scientific literature and apply emerging techniques to research questions.
  • Educate and train peers.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Mathematics or Biology related fields with significant data analysis experience.
  • Excellent programming skills, expert knowledge in at least one programming language e.g., Python, Perl, R, Julia, Java, or C/C++.
  • A solid foundation in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques, genomics, molecular biology or evolutionary biology.
  • Expertise in handling large data and hands-on experience in analysis and interpretation of high-throughput sequencing data.
  • Experience with bioinformatics workflow languages such as Nextflow or Snakemake.
  • A solid background in mathematics and statistical methods.
  • Machine learning knowledge and experience are highly desired.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • A collaborative mindset and positive attitude.
