I tried re creating this graph using area plot from ggplot2. I couldn't get the peaks to smooth out. Attached is the graph I got. The abundance of variants over time in one site

I think these are sometimes referred to as Ribbon Graphs. Maybe searching with that term will get you close to what you need.

I looked up ribbon graphs and in that process found something called alluvial graph. I got this. I have purposefully cropped the states here as it is sensitive data. enter image description here
