Variant Effect Predictor API, dbSNP annotation

Quick question for those running VEP using local API, if I am looking to annotate variant calls does VEP annotate dbSNP rs numbers or do you need to do that prior to running VEP (with something like SnpSift)?

EDIT: never mind, completely missed the ­­--check_existing flag.
