How was hierarchical clustering established for mRNA expression data?

I'm doing research in clustering algorithms for molecular data and cannot find some kind of resource (paper, book etc.) explaining why everyone is using hierarchical clustering for mRNA expression data for almost two decades now. I'd love to know more about the rationale and investigate less explored algorithms that potentially address the challenge of grouping samples based on mRNA expression.
