POSITION SUMMARY

Tremendous opportunities for discovery have emerged in the biological sciences, requiring the combined power of theory, data analysis, and simulation. Researchers are being confronted by an explosion of information from genome sequencing, gene expression profiling, proteomics, electron microscopy and tomography, and multiple high-resolution imaging modalities both dynamic and static.

Applications are invited for postdoctoral Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRF) at the Center for Computational Biology (CCB) in all our active areas of research. These include: Biophysical Modeling Developmental Dynamics Genomics Structural and Molecular Biophysics Systems Biology

CCB has both overarching and smaller-scale interests: Development of computational methods, for solving forward problems (evolutionary dynamics of biophysical systems) using cutting edge methods, and for data analysis of large-dimensional data (machine learning, inference, etc); Regulatory and genetic networks; Integrating multi-modal data (e.g. light microscopy with tomography with dynamical models or multi-modal molecular and clinical data integration via machine learning approaches) in mathematical and statistical models to understand, for example, the course and regulation of development. The structure of proteins via modelling, electron microscopy and tomography, their interaction networks, and their dynamics. Methods for coarse-graining and analysis of complex biological systems. Increasing interest in physiological modeling.

FRF positions are initially two-year appointments, renewable for a third year contingent upon performance. Flatiron Research Fellows will report to research scientists, group leaders, or the Center Director, as appropriate. Fellows must be capable of carrying out research independently while also collaborating with other researchers at CCB and throughout the Flatiron Institute, participating in the Institute's vibrant activities such as workshops and seminars, and mentoring students through our various internship programs. They are expected to disseminate their results through scientific publication, conferences, and/or software distribution, with the financial support of the Institute. Fellows will have access to the Flatiron Institute's powerful scientific computing resources.

The position is based in our New York City offices. Fellows may be eligible for subsidized housing within walking distance of the Institute.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, statistics, computational biology, biophysics, computer science, engineering, mathematics physics, or related disciplines or, if selected, will have received their PhD before the start of the FRF appointment.

Related Skills & Other Requirements Demonstrated abilities in mathematical modeling, analysis and/or scientific computation, scientific software and algorithm development, data analysis and inference, and image analysis Ability to do original and outstanding research in computational biology Ability to work well in an interdisciplinary environment, and to collaborate with experimentalists Strong oral and written communication, data documentation, and presentation skills Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS Curriculum vitae with publications list and, if relevant, links to software Research statement of no more than three (3) pages describing the applicant's past work, proposed research program, and potential synergies with activities at CCB Two (2) letters of recommendation submitted confidentially by the recommenders directly to ccbjobs@flatironinstitute.org.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Center for Computational Biology develops new and innovative methods of examining data in the biological sciences whose scale and complexity have historically resisted analysis. It sits within the Flatiron Institute, an internal research division of the Simons Foundation. The Flatiron Institute is dedicated to advancing scientific research through computational methods, including data analysis, theory, modeling and simulation. It currently It currently houses five science centers, focused on computational astrophysics (CCA), computational biology (CCB), computational mathematics (CCM), computational neuroscience (CCN) and computational quantum physics (CCQ), as well as a scientific computing core.

THE SIMONS FOUNDATION'S DIVERSITY COMMITMENT

Many of the greatest ideas and discoveries come from a diverse mix of minds, backgrounds and experiences, and we are committed to cultivating an inclusive work environment. The Simons Foundation actively seeks a diverse applicant pool and encourages candidates of all backgrounds to apply. We provide equal opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, religion, color, age, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic disposition, neurodiversity, disability, veteran status, or any other protected category under federal, state and local law.
