About the position Faculty of Biosciences at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) invites applications for a permanent position as senior engineer within Computer Science and Bioinformatics. The main task of this position is to support scientific computing at Faculty of Biosciences.

The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary Genome Biology research group, which possess expertise in genetics, evolutionary and comparative genomics, bioinformatics and systems biology. This group includes 2 full-time professors, 2 associate professors, 22 postdocs/researchers, 13 PhD students and 10 research technicians, teaming up within Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE; www.cigene.no). CIGENE has a strong aqua- and agri- research profile, with key strengths in application of ‘omics’ data to understand the genetic architecture of complex traits.

The group has a track-record in high-impact publishing and development of genomic resources for agricultural and marine species. The CIGENE lab includes state-of-the-art instrumentation for genotyping and sequencing and produces large amounts of data for subsequent analysis.

The NMBU IT department is responsible for providing the university's High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure - Orion. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with the relevant people internally in the IT department and assist in planning, managing, monitoring, documenting, and maintaining the system's hardware and software.

Main tasks Examples of specific tasks include:

installing and updating bioinformatic programs and data analysis pipelines at the NMBU’s computing cluster ‘Orion’ assist lab staff and researchers in the CIGENE lab with updating software on advanced instruments, connect instruments to existing network systems, and trouble-shoot when issues arise establishing specialized databases, and supervise and organize storage of big data provide basic and advanced training to students, temporary and permanent staff in how to optimally and responsibly use ‘Orion’ computer cluster, as well as other national high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure (sigma2) and cloud-computing platforms participate in designing and writing IT-sections of research grants and take part in the planning and procurement of research e-infrastructure for the faculty and NMBU A part of the position will be allocated to support the newly granted ELIXIR3-project Biovit _genlab_pipetteringsroboter Competence Required qualifications and competence:

Master degree in computer science, bioinformatics or similar. A PhD degree within the same fields is advantageous. Documented alternative experience can replace the formal requirements Good knowledge of Python, C/C++ or Perl programming Ability to install from source and troubleshoot scientific computing packages on Linux and Windows servers Good knowledge of Bash shell scripting, version control (svn/git), gdb and other scripting language debugging tools Knowledge of containers (e.g., Docker, Singularity) for scientific computing infrastructures Knowledge of SLURM and exposure to supercomputing queue/ batch system environments to assist scientists to use supercomputing facilities Desired qualifications and competence:

Experience in assisting/training students and scientists to use complex computer infrastructures Documented experience of analyzing ‘omics’ data to produce scientific papers Knowledge of automated configuration management systems, i.e. Ansible Personal skills

Patience and excellent collaborative and communicative skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Norwegian spoken and written skills also an advantage). Motivated and committed team-player with the desire to help build and guide a strong IT infrastructure and culture supporting research and teaching. Ability to respond effectively in instances where urgent actions are required. Remuneration and further information The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1181 senior engineer, salary grade 58-76 (NOK 524 900- 734 400) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment depending on qualifications.
