NCBI has a new ClusteredNR database – derived from the default BLAST protein nr database by clustering sequences at 90% identity / 90% length. You can get results faster and access to information about the distribution of your hits across a wider range of organisms and evolutionary distances. See NCBI's blog post for more information (https://go.usa.gov/xumzE).

This was so overdue. Still don't know why there is no PSI-BLAST option, as presumably one gets the greatest advantage with this reduced database when iterating the search several times.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll look into adding that database as an option for PSI-BLAST.
