Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Bioinformatician III is independently responsible for statistical genetic analyses of large-scale genetic datasets, using genetic analyses software, and developing programs and algorithms, scientific software applications. Will perform statistical genomic analyses of next generation sequencing, gene discovery, meta-analyses, genetic-epidemiologic analyses. The analyses will focus on large-scale data and discovery of associations between common and rare genetic variants and human disease, as well as associations between these genetic variants and phenotypes or progression of disease and response to treatments. Individual will submit publications in peer reviewed journals, present at scientific meetings, and grow in the academic environment.

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: • Lead data analyses involving next generation sequencing and gene discovery as well as gene-environment and genetic-epidemiologic association analyses and analyze longitudinal studies. • Develop internal tools to facilitate large scale and custom analyses of genotype-phenotype associations. • Integrate computational methods/pipelines with high performance computing clusters. • Develop novel algorithms and integrated data visualization applications • Establish and customize genomic and proteomics databases • Develop custom databases and web portals for managing raw and processed data. • Coordinate and collaborate with other bioinformaticians, biostatisticians, information technology professionals, and interdepartmental project teams. • Create database of internal and public genetic genomic data • Participate in presentation of project findings and abstracts including participation in periodic project status meetings and presentation of final project deliverables. • Properly document the analyses and all datasets used in computational analysis • Provide summary report of results suitable for inclusion in manuscript and grant applications. • Interface and collaborate with other researchers, including external and academic partners • Develop or acquire new computational tools for data analysis • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Doctoral Degree Preferred in quantitative genetic-epidemiology, statistical genetics, computer science, bioinformatics, genomics, systems biology, computational biology, or applied mathematics, or equivalent experience. • Master's degree required in Computer Science, a related computational discipline, or equivalent experience • 3 or more years of experience and working knowledge of genetic databases and websites; strong background in computational programs such as Operating Systems (e.g. UNIX, LINUX, Windows); Scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, Bash, Tcl); Programming languages (e.g. Java, C/C++) and statistical programming (R or MatLab), PLINK, SAS. • Thorough knowledge of methods used in complex trait genetics, genomic research projects including quality control, knowledge of potential biases and how to control for them in study design and analyses. • Proficiency with large complex genetic data sets and high-performance computing • Experience with cloud-based computing on AWS • Strong communication skills, both the oral and written necessary to interact with a wide range of individuals • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment. • Proven research record with high quality publications and oral presentations preferable. • Self-starter and ability to work independently with minimal supervision • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills • Team player, respectful and professional behavior, willing to teach and share Highly qualified candidates will have: • Hands on experience in large-scale genetic data analysis • Experience in statistical computing • Understanding of basic molecular biology • Ability to manage and steer research projects • Ability to prepare manuscripts for publication in top tier journals • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
