About Me - Background/Context:

Introduction & Education:

Hey everyone, I'm Alex! I've recently earned my B.Sc. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from Canada. Bioinformatics has become my passion, and I aim to carve a career in the industry.

In this post, I'm reaching out for guidance on the most suitable path forward. One key decision I'm grappling with is choosing between an M.Binf. and M.Sc. degree. The insights you provide will be incredibly appreciated!

While completing my degree, I discovered my passion for bioinformatics after taking my first computer science course and an introductory bioinformatics class. My thesis project initially had specific wet-lab components, but due to unforeseen challenges, I pivoted to a computational approach. This change was well-received by my supervisor. Through self-study, I gained familiarity with Molecular Docking (AutoDock Vina) and multiple sequence alignment (NCBI COBALT). I later showcased this data in a public presentation, a feat I'm particularly proud of.

Industry Aspirations:

I'm inclined towards industry roles. With that in mind, I'm considering an M.Binf. from the University of Guelph, seemingly tailored for industry-relevant skills.

Post-Graduation Journey:

Currently, I'm enhancing my computational skills through the CS50 course offered by edX/Harvard, where I've covered topics like memory management, algorithms, and programming languages such as C, Python, and JavaScript. I've also created a GitHub portfolio to showcase my projects from this course. After completing the course, I aim to publish a project on GitHub analyzing NGS RNA-seq data related to lung cancer and smoking. Notably, I've utilized ChatGPT to draft a project protocol, drawing inspiration from 'Bioinformatics Analyst' job descriptions.

Your Insights Needed:

  1. Tips for the smoothest transition into the bioinformatics industry?
  2. M.Binf. versus M.Sc. for industry roles - which would you recommend?

Looking forward to a great discussion with this community! :)

M.Binf. - Pros:

  • A 1-year industry-aligned program.
  • Accelerated entry into the workforce.
  • No need for supervisor outreach during application; however, a year-end research project is mandatory.

M.Binf. - Cons:

  • Less flexibility than M.Sc.
  • Industry placements can be highly competitive. An M.Binf. alum I spoke with highlighted the value of acquiring in-demand skills that could distinguish myself from others in the same program, which inspired my dive into NGS data analysis

seemingly tailored for industry-relevant skills.

I don't think there is anything industry-specific in terms of skills for a first job after the MS/Msc. Proficiency with at least one current programming language with demonstrable examples and adequate knowledge of statistics should be enough to land you that first job. You already have biology background so that part is covered.

Applying to the right job at the right time may be the most important thing. Network as much as you can while you are completing your degree program. If you are able to do an internship during your MS (choose the program that offers one over one that does not) then that may prove valuable. Who knows, you may decide after the internship that Industry is or is not for you in long term.

Thank you! Being proficient with at least one programming language is great to know. I've been leaning towards Python so I'll eventually practice more with this language.

Network as much as you can while you are completing your degree program.

Regarding this point, I'll plan to reach out to universities to get more clarification about how their internships work (whether it's through a co-op program, etc.) if they offer them. I see internships can vary by how they're organized. Appreciate the help!
