PhD-position in bioinformatics / computational biology (75% E13) at Ruhr-University Bochum
The recently established Computational Phenomics group led by Prof. Dr. Arne Sahm uses bioinformatics methods to study the aging process. For example, we are assembling genomes of exceptionally long-lived species to identify evolutionary adaptations that enable these species to age slowly and healthily. Furthermore, we are using multi-omics approaches to understand how environmental toxins and social stress accelerate aging and the development of associated diseases.
With the help of your PhD supervisor, you will drive a DFG-funded research project. You will investigate which epigenetic differences cause reproductive mole-rats to age significantly slower than non-reproductive ones. You will also investigate which genomic and epigenomic changes contribute to mole-rats living several times as long as closely related species.
Your tasks:
- Evaluation of extensive sequencing data sets (WGBS, RRBS, ATAC, RNA-seq)
- Phylogenetic comparisons between long-lived and short-lived species
- Adaptation and/or development of new bioinformatics methods
- Interpretation and publication of bioinformatic analyses
Your profile:
- Master’s degree in bioinformatics / computational biology or a related field, e.g., life sciences, informatics or mathematics
- Programming skills and ideally Linux command line experience
- High level of motivation, creativity, self-responsibility and self-organization
- English communication skills
Our offerings:
- Challenging and varied tasks with a high degree of personal responsibility
- A friendly and collegial environment
- Extensive training and further education opportunities
- A varied sports programme with over 80 types of sport and the university's own fitness studio
- A workplace in a green environment with direct access to the botanical garden of the Ruhr University Bochum
