Hello everyone, I'm Mark a bioinformatic scientist II (US). My family has recently undergone some changes (baby on way!) and I'm under pressure to bring home more income. Additionally, I have been underpaid and under appreciated in my role for a long time - so I would welcome a change. I have spent the last 3 months sending out about 50 applications, however I've gotten 0 interviews. I know the market is in shambles - can you guys help me understand what reasonable expectations should be for this job market? Is it really as bad as everyone says? Is it worth hanging up my resume and trying to wait things out instead? Should I be happy just to have a stable paying job (even if underpaid)?

What can i do to maximize my chances? I've heard having a github profile is a big attention grabber - but all of my projects are under IP. I've worked very hard on my resume - but I'm not sure if its good. If anyone would be willing to review my resume I would be VERY, VERY appreciative. I'm happy to pay for your dinner or lunch to show my appreciation. I would post my resume - but its impossible to anonymize without gutting it at this point.

I've heard of career coaches and recruiters - do you think someone like that would be helpful at this point?

Thanks everyone for your advice. If you are a worried job-seeker like me; you are not alone. We will all get through this together. Best wishes and blessings. - Mark

I will give you advice that you didn't ask for: try to provide more detail if you are hoping for specific answers. What is your background (at least in general - ATIG)? Your accomplishments (ATIG)? The type of job you want? Are you flexible in terms of location? Would you get positive letters of recommendation from your current employer if you asked?

Maybe bioinformatic scientist II is meaningful to others, but I have no idea what that means. There are many job openings posted on this site and elsewhere: are you responding to those or sending unsolicited applications?

If you have been in your position for a long time and have done a good job, I'd be willing to give you a raise rather than go through finding someone else. Have you tried getting more money from your present employer?
