The Vertebrate Genomics team seeks a highly motivated bioinformatician to work in resequencing informatics at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), which is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. This job closes on the 17th April.

The bioinformatician will work within the Vertebrate Genomics team to support high-throughput 'omics projects. (S)he will work with other members of Vertebrate Genomics to provide data coordination and primary analysis services. Example projects include the International Genome Sample Resource, BLUEPRINT, HipSci, EBiSC and FAANG. These projects involve a range of data types from resequencing data to epigenomic data, such ChIP-Seq and DNA methylation status.

The focus of this role is to create systems to support the data flow for these projects. The post holder will develop and run quality control and analysis pipelines for 'omics data. They will also help to establish distribution platforms for the data produced which will include setting up FTP sites, track data hubs and web- based data portals. The role will involve close collaboration with the Ensembl teams to ensure that the data are well represented within the Ensembl infrastructure.

The types of tasks that this role will involve include:

  • Design and implementation of new analysis pipelines for genomic and epigenomic data.
  • Supporting data flow into the EMBL-EBI archives.
  • Working closely with collaborators who are generating data or running analyses for the projects the team is participating in.
  • Building distribution platforms for the data these consortia create.
  • Representing the project and the institute at conferences.

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, preforms basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academia and industry. We are part of EMBL, Europe's flagship laboratory for the life sciences.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must hold a Masters' degree in computer science or bioinformatics and have previous experience of working both in a production software environment and of organising tasks to fit defined release cycles.

The post holder must have experience of working in a UNIX/Linux environment and have programming experience. It would be advantageous to the candidate to be able to use Perl as this is the main programming language of the group. Knowledge and experience of bioinformatics, variation data and analysis tools would be beneficial.

The successful candidate will be committed to producing and distributing high-quality results, be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in a international academic environment. (S)he should be comfortable with detail-orientated work, project deadlines and the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field.
