Salary range: £30574 to £38564per annum plus excellent benefits

Fixed-term until 19th January 2017

We are seeking a talented Bioinformatician to work on WormBase-ParaSite, a new portal for parasitic worm genomics, integrating data for hundreds of species and providing efficient and intuitive access to the data for researchers. Parasitic worms are responsible for more than one billion human infections globally and have a devastating impact on livestock and agriculture.

You will work on a wide range of analysis, integration, production and community-engagement activities for WormBase-ParaSite, and will also actively participate in the exciting next phase of development for the resource. The main areas of focus will be:

  • Analysis, integration and presentation of large-scale functional genomics data sets (e.g. RNASeq gene expression assays)
  • Data integration and development to enable WormBase ParaSite as tool for anti-helminthic drug target identification
  • Customization and deployment of automated genome annotation and comparative genomics pipelines that scale to hundreds of genomes
  • Outreach, including talks and practical demonstrations at workshops and conferences

WormBase-ParaSite is a sister project to the well-known WormBase and Ensembl projects. The Ensembl genomics infrastructure is used in a number of ways in the project. The post is also highly collaborative, and will involve working closely with other WormBase and Ensembl staff both at the Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).

This post presents a great opportunity for an early career bioinformatcian to hone their skills in genome analysis and data integration, and widely used technologies such as Ensembl. We particularly welcome applications from candidates nearing the end of post-graduate training courses in bioinformatics.

Although this post is limited to two years in the first instance, it is anticipated that the next phase of development will lay the foundations for sustainability and longer-term funding.

Essential Skills

  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Perl)
  • Broad knowledge of practical bioinformatics (use of biological databases, sequence analysis tools etc)
  • Good communication skills
  • Highly developed problem solving skills
  • Detail oriented

Ideal Skills

  • Experience with processing and analyzing RNASeq data
  • Experience with genome annotation methodologies and software
  • Experience with the Ensembl data management infrastructure
  • Experience with database programming (e.g. SQL)
  • Experience with using compute cluster and batch queuing systems Experience with software version control systems
  • Knowledge of parasitology

Other information

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.

To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.

Our Benefits include: Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, Group Income Protection, Healthcare scheme, Childcare Vouchers, Nursery and 25 days Annual Leave plus Bank Holidays. We also have a gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, and a free campus bus service. Our thriving Sports and Social Club provides many opportunities to meet with people working across the campus.

Closing date: 15th October 2015 however applications will be considered and reviewed on an on-going basis and therefore the post may be filled before the deadline.
