Position description

Counsyl has created a revolutionary platform that gives people access to critical health information at key times in their lives—for those starting a family and for those at risk of inherited cancer.

We are looking for engineers on our Wetlab Team to incorporate genomic science with solid software design principles in order to develop applications and technologies for next generation sequencing data results management. As an Software Engineer - Bioinformatics on the Wetlab team, you will expand the full Counsyl LIMS stack to enhance the speed, efficiency, and quality of our CLIA lab in bringing new products to market and scaling those products to reduce costs. Your work on Counsyl's deeply integrated LIMS will enable breakthroughs in assay development and expand the range and scope of detectable genomic variation. First and foremost this will require capturing and modeling the science and complexity of true genomic variation and accurately expressing patient results for downstream curation, risk calculation and reporting.. These innovations in NGS technology will allow us to deliver high quality new assays that ultimately deliver information that will impact patient lives.

What you'll do

  • Build sequencing results review application that capture the full breadth of genomic variation for each sample and ensures the accuracy/performance of NGS results data from our wetlab.
  • Work closely with Computational Biologists, Protocol Scientists, and laboratory directors to design the data visualizations and complex workflows for our call reviewing interface.
  • Work across the full stack to enhance our wetlab operations to both optimize production sequencing at scale and facilitate research investigations.
  • Build out novel approaches to generalize qc metrics, detect anomalous results, and define statistical retest logic for results fidelity.

About you

  • Experience with modern software and databases: Python, R, NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, SQL, etc.
  • Experience with common NGS tools: Read alignment, variant calling, pileup visualizations, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency at creating effective data visualizations through publications or software applications.
  • Web frameworks such as Django and Javascript frameworks such as D3.js, Angular.js, or React.js a plus. Experience with workflow and UX design a double plus.
  • Work demonstrated by a GitHub account, personal web page, or prior experience.
  • Research or industry experience with NGS sequencing data are required.
  • PhD or MS in Computational Biology, Genomics, Software Engineering, or other related field.

About Counsyl

Counsyl is a health technology company that offers DNA screening for diseases that can impact men, women and their children. The Counsyl philosophy is simple: screen for diseases where advanced knowledge makes a difference in health outcomes, whether it's changing a behavior, pursuing preventative measures, or simply preparing for what lies ahead.

The Counsyl team includes an accomplished group of problem-solvers - top engineers, scientists, and designers - who are taking the lead on building the modern clinical laboratory. Scientific rigor, custom robotics, and software are at the heart of every Counsyl product, resulting in better, faster and more affordable screens that are broadly accessible. Beyond the laboratory, Counsyl offers doctors and patients a technology platform for results delivery in real time, with on-demand access to board-certified genetic counselors.

Counsyl has screened more than 400,000 patients and served more than 6,000 health care professionals in its CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited and NYS CLEP-permitted clinical laboratory. The company has raised a total of $102 million and is privately backed by RSTP, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Founders Fund, Felicis Ventures, David Drummond, and other high profile investors.
