Can PLINK handle gzipped ped / map files?

I have a couple of gzipped plink files:

hgdpceph.affy500k.map.gz
hgdpceph.affy500k.ped.gz

Can PLINK read them directly? I know plink can handle gzipped vcf files, but I couldn't find anything on plink's documentation regarding a gzipped ped.

No, this is not supported by plink, since --make-bed is usually a more effective way of compressing .ped/.map filesets.

(Compressed .bim files will probably be supported by PLINK 2.0, though.)
