The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University seeks a talented, creative and enthusiastic individual to contribute to the design and development of FISSEQ (Fluorescent in situ sequencing). Reporting to the Senior Staff Scientist in Synthetic Biology, the Software Engineer will work with a collaborative team of academic, staff, and industrial researchers on FISSEQ (Fluorescent in situ sequencing) Technology. The position is in support of our IARPA Machine Intelligence from Cortical Networks (MICrONS) contract. The contract is a collaborative effort between the Wyss Institute, Harvard Medical School, MIT, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, and Columbia University to map cortical circuits from the synaptic level in the mouse brain.

The Software Engineer will develop, test, run and maintain software for novel sequencing devices and associated technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, and integration of our image processing pipeline with the cloud services API developed by IARPA. This 'Big Data' project requires working with terabytes of images, and creating software interfaces for Scientists to efficiently explore and analyze the resulting data. The successful candidate will also perform testing, organize and analyze data and report results. The candidate will contribute to internal reports, patent applications, Institute presentations, and Institute publications. The Wyss Institute Synthetic Biology platform focuses on the development of high-throughput technologies and tools related to DNA sequencing and synthesis, and directed evolution of bacteria. This is an opportunity to enter into the synthetic biology as it pertains to molecular diagnostics and connectomics.

The mission of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University is to transform human healthcare and the environment by emulating the way nature builds. Developed as an alliance between Harvard and other premier academic and clinical partner institutions, Institute faculty and staff collaborate in high-risk, fundamental research and science-driven technology development. A major focus of the Institute is to translate the technologies developed by its faculty and staff into commercial products and therapies through collaborations with clinical investigators and establishment of corporate alliances.
