Senior Scientific Programmer

Bellwether Bio, a liquid biopsy technology company, seeks a highly qualified individual with immediate availability for the position of Senior Scientific Programmer. This full-time position reports to the Chief Technology Officer. The Senior Scientific Programmer will support the CTO to develop Bellwether’s computational toolkit for translating DNA sequencing data into clinically actionable findings, building off of rich and well-curated genomic datasets derived from cohorts of individuals with cancer (or other conditions) and matched controls.

The ideal candidate is a highly trained, self-motivated, creative programmer with experience the in biological sciences and a passion for improving healthcare outcomes. The Senior Scientific Programmer will have a track record of independent research or project management, and will be expected to contribute intellectually to Bellwether Bio’s R&D efforts. Expertise in scientific or technical programming in Python, R, C++, and/or other modern programming languages and data visualization packages is required. Professional or academic experience with analysis of large volumes of data, machine learning, and cloud computing environments is strongly desired.

Specific duties include:

  • Architecture and implementation of internal-facing software to support Bellwether’s vision for noninvasive testing
  • Design and execution of data-driven, scientific research based on testable hypotheses, making use of Bellwether Bio’s genomic datasets
  • Detailed analysis of next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets using open-source and/or proprietary tools
  • Summary and visualization of results in the form of technical reports, figures, tables, and slides

Qualifications: PhD or equivalent degree required. Exceptional candidates with at least five years of professional experience in lieu of an advanced degree may be considered. Substantial coursework and/or professional experience in biology, computer science, statistics, or closely related field strongly preferred. The position may require occasional and brief domestic travel.

First unveiled in a January 2016 Cell paper, technology was originally developed in the lab of University of Washington Professor (and HHMI Investigator) Jay Shendure.
