Description: A PhD student position is available at the Institute of Infectious Diseases, University of Bern, to investigate the epidemiology and evolution of viruses of clinical importance (enteroviruses, adenoviruses).

Skills requested: MSc degree in Biomedical or molecular Sciences, Biology, Ecology, or related fields. The student must be enthusiastic for multidisciplinary research in clinical virology and next-generation sequencing technologies, including the application and development of bioinformatics/biostatistics approaches. Conventional and advanced molecular techniques, combined with in-house bioinformatic pipelines, will be developed during the project. Therefore, candidates with background or experience in both microbiology and bioinformatics will be favored. The student must fulfill the requirements of the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern to be accepted as a PhD student. Fluency in spoken and written English is required; other languages (German, French, Italian) would be advantageous.

We offer: The IFIK provides an international working atmosphere with regular seminars in English, modern laboratory equipment, and a multidisciplinary and collaborative working atmosphere. Results of research will be presented by the PhD student at national and international meetings. The student will be enrolled in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern (www.gcb.unibe.ch). The salary will be based on the Swiss National Science Foundation scale (www.snf.ch).

Starting date: September 1, 2017
Duration: 36 months
