Bioinformatics Scientist (Cancer Genomics) - NCI/NIH- Rockville, MD
Position Description: We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to join the Integrative Tumor Epidemiology Branch (ITEB) of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The ITEB mission is to conduct large-scale, international epidemiological research on cancer etiology and progression through integrative analyses of risk factors and tissue profiling to inform prevention and clinical strategies. The Bioinformatics Scientist will work closely with more senior bioinformaticians and epidemiologists within ITEB and will be responsible for managing and analyzing large genomic databases from epidemiological and clinical studies. This includes but is not limited to data manipulation, algorithmic implementation, statistical programming, and integrated genomic analyses. The position will provide support and expertise in installing, troubleshooting and running analytical pipelines using open-source and commercial scientific software on Unix/Linux and Cloud-hosted platforms, and using publicly available bioinformatics and genomic databases and tools. Data types can include genome-wide genotyping arrays, DNA sequencing, gene expression profiling, and methylation profiling, from a range of tissues and cancer types.
Qualifications: Seeking an individual with a master’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or a related field. Experience in genetics or genomics and/or multiple language programming skills/bioinformatics is a plus. The equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience will be considered. The candidate must have programming experience, be familiar with Unix/Linux system and clusters, and be team oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to learn and adopt bioinformatics techniques and resources.
Preferred qualifications include: experience in whole exome/genome sequencing analysis (such as mutation, copy number and structural variant calling), mutational signatures, tumor evolution, and epigenetic analysis, familiarity and established working knowledge of tools to investigate cancer genomics with publicly available data sources (such as dbGaP, TCGA, ENCODE, 1000 Genomes, TARGET, GTEX, gnomAD, cBioPortal) and diverse genomic annotations and bioinformatic tools; experience managing large datasets and computational tasks; experience in the field of molecular and population genetics; and working knowledge of human genetics or molecular genetics, epidemiology, clinical research or biostatistics.
