Biopython was invited by Google summer of code last year. Does Biopython participate in GSoC 2013? I am really interested in Python and bioinformatics, and the open source world is so amazing that i want to join it :)

A few points:

  1. Their track record over the past couple of years would suggest that they will try to participate in GSoC this year, but this is probably one of those question you should really ask on the biopython mailing list. There is a user list as well as a developer list.

  2. If you are truly inspired by the awesomeness of "open source world," and biopython in particular, you do not have to "wait" until GSoC to join. If you really want to hack on biopython, then start now working with the community now. One way to do so would be to join their mailing lists and participate in the discussions that go on there. An added bonus of early (and maybe a bit more selfless) engagement now would be to show that you have "the skills" to be a productive GSoC candidate, likely giving you a higher chance to score one of their (likely limited) GSoC slots.

+1! In addition to checking out the mailing list and developer list, you can also check out Biopython's source from http://github.com/biopython/biopython and play around with it. You can learn a lot from reading the source. Hopefully you'll also see some potential aspects for contribution :).

I mentored Bow as one of Biopython's GSoC 2012 students - this is more good advice.

Hopefully yes, Biopython will participate in GSoC 2013 under the OBF (see http://open-bio.org - Open Bioinformatics Foundation) as in previous years, but this is ultimately up to Google and so we don't know for sure yet.

Steve's reply is also very relevant.

Good news, Google will be running GSoC 2013 as expected. We're starting to talk about Biopython GSoC project ideas, http://lists.open-bio.org/pipermail/biopython-dev/2013-February/010384.html
