BlueGnome is a small company whose molecular cytogenetics technologies have had a big impact. A recent clinical trial of our 24Sure chromosome screening test demonstrated a 65% increase in pregnancy rates during IVF treatment (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17942176). Our CytoChip products have been used to investigate the cytogenetic abnormalities associated with intellectual disability in over 40 countries worldwide. BlueGnome’s sustained growth over the last ten years has led to recognition by the Sunday Times Tech Track as the fastest growing biotech in the UK and the prestigious Queens award for international trade.

In 2012 we were acquired by Illumina, joining the diagnostics business unit. Together we are busy developing the next generation of tools for genomic analysis building on Illumina’s core analytical technologies and our industry leading BlueFuse Multi software. As a Bioinformatics scientist at BlueGnome, you will be part of a highly collaborative team working closely with software engineers and scientists from the research and production teams. You will be involved in all aspects of our product development lifecycle. In particular you will be responsible for assembling the contextual biological data which is critical to the users of our products. Other work may include supporting experimental work with statistical analysis as well as development and testing algorithms and visualisations for new types of data. There will also be opportunity for deep collaboration with other Illumina sites and functions.

The ideal candidate will care deeply about finding the best solutions to our customer’s genomics and informatics problems. They will have good knowledge of public sources of genomics data sources such as Ensembl, NCBI and UCSC. They will be comfortable writing scripts in a language such as Perl or Python, maintaining existing production code and using databases to manage large amounts of data. As part of a commitment to quality, they will have great attention to detail and will use strategies such as unit tests to verify both data and code. Some previous experience with Matlab, R or similar and an understanding of statistical techniques would be advantageous but is not essential. The candidate should have a university degree in Bioinformatics. Graduates from other disciplines who have gained relevant genomic domain knowledge and programming experience should also apply.

This role is a unique opportunity to work on some of the toughest problems in Bioinformatics arising from the clinical adoption of genomics technologies. Our products have the potential to fundamentally transform diagnostics.

Our Benefits include:

  1. Competitive Salary.
  2. Modern office spaces conveniently located on the edge of Cambridge.
  3. Free parking.
  4. Child Care Voucher schemes.
  5. Non-contributory pension scheme
  6. 25 days annual leave
