About the position

A faculty-level opportunity exists for an accomplished bioinformatician or computational biologist to join the Bioinformatics Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. The Division has a record of high-impact research in statistical bioinformatics, cancer genomics and systems biology including the creation of widely-used bioinformatics methodology. We are looking for a new laboratory head who will build on and complement existing strengths. This might include statistical bioinformatics and spatial omics but all areas of bioinformatics will be considered. A joint appointment with the Advanced Technology & Biology Division would be considered favourably depending on the interests of the candidate.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent qualification and will have completed post-doctoral work resulting in an outstanding record of scientific achievements. Their research focus will be aligned with the division and the institute. A history of a highly innovative and collaborative approach to research would be highly valued. Women and early-career researchers are especially encouraged to apply.

Terms of appointment

This position is available for 7 years, maximum-term in a full-time capacity, renewable thereafter based on performance review, with underwriting for research and salary support during this period. Salary and appointment level dependent on experience. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.

General enquiries can be directed to Gordon Smyth smyth@wehi.edu.au or Melissa Davis davis.m@wehi.edu.au.

At the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute we strive to ensure our staff and students enjoy a great working environment. We value diversity and gender equity in our work force and promote flexible working arrangements for staff to balance working requirements and personal needs. We have implemented a number of gender equity initiatives to support women laboratory heads.

How to apply

Please email your application including cover letter, a full CV, a one-page summary of research achievements, a two-page summary of future research plans and contact details of three referees. Particular attention should be given to how your research will enhance the Institute’s existing research programs.
