Dept Marketing Statement

Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world’s genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. The Genomics Institute involves approximately 90 personnel, participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts and foundations; in addition the GI provides funding support for approximately 50 additional personnel for GI related projects. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions.

The California Department of Public Health Pathogen Genomics team at the GI uses the latest sequence analysis and visualization technologies to facilitate tracking and research for public health responses. Job Overview

Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced software professional with a full understanding of industry practices, community standards and relevant policies and procedures to medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. Resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting tools, methods and techniques to obtain results. Projects include improving UShER analysis in a cloud collaboration environment and implementing tools for streamlining the process of pairing PHI/PII metadata with genome sequence information for co-visualization. Develops methods for geographic/genetic co-visualization using the google maps API or other geographic visualization platforms. Maintains security of the data on the clients’ networks. Customizes tools to the specifics of secure databases.

Salary Information: Starting Salary Range: $66,300 - $93,200/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties

  • 25%: Plans, designs, develop, modify, debugs, deploys and evaluates complex software for co-visualization of phylogenomic data with geographic data from secure sources. Analyzes existing software or works to formulate logic for new complex bioinformatics analysis pipelines in a cloud environment and devises complex algorithms. Performs complex data analysis and tests using R, Python, C++, JavaScript, HTML/CSS.
  • 25%: Negotiates, develops and executes moderately complex test plans. Develops conversion and system implementation plans. Trains users in conversion and implementation of systems. Performs complex data modeling, metadata extraction, performance and integration testing and builds interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents. Monitors and employs source code control techniques and configuration management.
  • 25%: Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes recommendations for approval of system and programming documentation. Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards. Negotiates with stakeholders on the creation of software specifications. Ensures project reports are completed.
  • 25%: Understands and applies industry practices, community standards and department policies and procedures relating to work assignments. Understands policies and follows procedures in accordance with Security Plan. Interacts with senior level internal personnel. May serve as technical lead for a software development project of moderate scope. Trains users in conversion and implementation of systems. Negotiates project plans with stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Intermediate knowledge of secure software development.
  • Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute technical narrative to grant proposals.
  • Thorough experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
  • Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated software repository skills. Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Thorough experience with common programming tools, preferably Python, C++, JavaScript, Visual Basic, HTML/CSS. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Demonstrated broad problem solving skills.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work independently.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Ability to learn effectively.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
