I am trying to understand why this Entrez search is returning unexpected records:

SANT*[Text Word] AND Ectocarpus[Organism]

I think the search is case insensitive.

That should return records containing surnames like "Santos", "SANTOS", "Santolaria". Or place names like "Santa Monica", "SANTOS", "Santillana", "Bahia de Todos os Santos"

Once I sort the list by sequence length, this is the first record I see: MN181444.1 . But I can't figure out why it is in the list:

Of course it contains the organism name "Ectocarpus", but I couldn't find the string "SANT" anywhere in the text.

Are you sure [Text Word] is a valid Entrez search term? I don't see it listed in the official table.

GenoMax [Text Word] is in third position counting upwards from bottom of Table 1 in your link.

You can also find it if you click the "All fields" selection list in the advanced search form: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/advanced

And it works. In fact I am finding most of the records I am looking for. I just don't understand why some (apparently) unrelated records appear in search results.

I see. It is possible that either there is metadata fields that have those words that are not visible or there may simply be some errors. Help for that term does say

Terms indexed here are included in an All Fields search, not generally useful.
