A PhD Research Fellowship is available at the Section for Genetics and Evolutionary Biology (EVOGENE), Department of Biosciences (IBV), University of Oslo. Starting date no later than 01.10.2022.

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, or for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department.

The successful candidate will work on development and use of computational tools for investigation of the evolutionary basis of gene regulatory and epigenetic mechanisms influenced by the three-dimensional (3D) organization of the genome.

The work will be carried out in a cross-disciplinary environment in close collaboration with molecular, evolutionary, and computational biologists, and bioinformaticians. The project will explore and model evolutionary conserved features and patterns in genome data generated locally or available in the public domain. There will be opportunities for the candidate to engage in design and implementation of experiments for gathering new data.

The candidate will also be affiliated with the UiO Centre for Bioinformatics (SBI) and is expected to draw on expertise from the combined research environment at IBV and SBI.

The candidate will be jointly supervised by professor Rein Aasland and Associate Professor Jonas Paulsen. The emphasis of the group is to understand the evolutionary basis of 3D genome regulation.
