How do I change the path of the bowtie2 temp file

Every time I use Bowtie2, the temp files are generated in very large sizes. However, there is no enough space for the default path of these temp files generated in the partition of the platform I apply, while there are plenty of free space in the other partitions. Unfortunately, I have no permission to re-divide the partition, so I just want to change the path of generated temp file when I process Bowtie2. How should I do?

This is not specific to Bowtie2, but many programs will use the TMPDIR environment variable, which you can set before running the software with:

export TMPDIR=<path to directory with a lot of space>
