How did you figure all of this from a simple Thank you? Could it not be that the OP figured out what the problem was based on our combined responses, thanked us both and upvoted our responses?

I think you know better than to expect that everyone will verbally confirm problem solution.

I am no R expert, but the error message is pretty clear. It seems that you don't have a column patient in one or both of your data frames.
