I am building a new workstation for our lab and we are looking for a 64 core CPU. Our max budget for it considering what we want to spend on other parts is around 2000$. We mostly deal with NGS data, machine learning, and virtualization.
Depending on the region of the world you are in the prices could be very different. A quick search shows that a relatively inexpensive 64-core CPU could be close to $1000 for AMD threadripper with EPYC being more expensive (these would be parts with warranties not grey market).
It may be best to do your own research and find one that suits your budget/availability in your region. Or as was suggested in a prior thread, see if you can buy a refurbished last generation workstation to get the best value.
