Transitioning from Commercial Data Engineering to Bioinformatics
Hello BioStars community,
I'm a seasoned Data Architect looking to pivot into bioinformatics and would appreciate your advice on making this transition.
My background:
10+ years building data infrastructures for fintech, gaming, and ride-sharing.
Led 3 major DWH projects
Specialized in real-time pipelines
Why bioinformatics?
While I've successfully architected systems for commercial domains, I'm increasingly drawn to scientific applications. The idea of building data platforms for:
- Protein folding pipelines
- Multi-omics data integration
- Telescope sensor networks
...excites me far more than another fintech DWH.
What I'm seeking:
- Data Engineer roles in bioinformatics/genomics (I'm open to title/compensation downgrades)
- Opportunities to contribute my distributed systems expertise to meaningful science
My ask to the community:
- Which companies/labs would value my commercial-scale data experience?
- How can I best demonstrate relevance despite lacking formal bioinformatics training?
- Are there open-source projects where I could contribute infrastructure skills?

This kind of post is usually used to announce job vacancies/availabilities, not resumes. Your title makes it even more confusing. Are you looking for a data engineer? That's what your title says.
The Swedish Research Infrastructures currently have several openings, e.g. Systems Developer Linux / Devops at AIDA Data Hub.
