A position for a postdoctoral researcher working in Elo and Lahesmaa Laboratories is open for applications. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist in bioinformatics who is interested in Molecular Systems Immunology, T cell epigenomics and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases.

Description of recruiting organization

Successful applicant will join our international research groups at Turku Centre for Biotechnology, BioCity Turku, Turku, Finland and will be co-supervised by Dr. Laura Elo, Research Director in Bioinformatics and Dr. Riitta Lahesmaa, Academy professor, at Turku Centre for Biotechnology, University of Turku, Finland.

Turku Centre for Biotechnology (www.btk.fi) is a joint department of University of Turku (www.utu.fi) and Åbo Akademi University, providing high-end technologies and expertise to academic and industrial researchers and a stimulating multidisciplinary and international research environment.

The Bioinformatics Unit and the Computational Biomedicine Group of Dr. Laura Elo (www.btk.fi/research/research-groups/elo) develops computational data analysis tools and mathematical models for biomedical research. The eventual goal is to improve diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of complex diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. A specific focus is on analysing and interpreting data generated by modern high-throughput biotechnologies, such as next-generation sequencing and mass-spectrometry proteomics.

Molecular Systems Immunology group (http://www.btk.fi/research/research-groups/lahesmaa/) aims at understanding the regulation of human immune system to predict, prevent and treat immune mediated disorders. We study epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of T cells and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes.

Description of the position to fill

The postdoctoral researcher will work in a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, biology and medicine, ensuring that there are competent additional personnel to assist in the projects as needed.

The work of the postdoctoral researcher involves development and application of computational and statistical methods for the analysis of high-throughput molecular data, with a focus on next generation sequencing data and their combination with other omics data. Particular objectives are detection of biomarkers for immune mediated diseases as well as unraveling the underlying molecular mechanisms.

The position is for 2 years, starting from 1.2.2018. Starting date is negotiable. The salary is in accordance with the universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5-6 where the work specific salary component is 2865.30-3340.77€/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on personal performance, which is at most 46.3% of the base salary. There is a trial period of four months.

Qualifications

Successful applicants have:

  • A relevant Doctoral degree (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics)
  • Scientific publications in high impact international journals
  • Previous experience in next generation sequencing, epigenomic and genomic research and related analysis platforms and tools
  • Experience in R, Matlab or other mathematical/statistical software
  • High level of motivation, self-initiative and independency
  • Excellent team work and communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • Previous experience in immunology is considered an advantage
  • International research experience and experience in supervision of students is considered an advantage

Application

The applications for the position should be submitted latest on 2.1.2018 using the electronic system. The application should include a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, contact information for 3 referees, and copies of relevant degree certificates.
