I'm new to bioinformatics and had just gotten the hang of usearch when suddenly the Mac Catalina update came around and ruined it all for me!

I get "Bad CPU type in executable" whenever I try to run usearch

I understand that the latest Mac version upgraded to a 64-bit system, and that the free version of usearch is 32-bit, however the usearch website says the 32-bit version should be compatible with 32 and 64-bit systems.

Anyone have any advice? Is this just the end of the free version of usearch for Mac users?

Very likely. Apple has been stating for 2 years that they will not allow any 32-bit applications to run with catalina and the developers have to update their applications.

Edit: You may be able to use a VM to run a guest OS on catalina and then run usearch in that VM.

VSEARCH is intended as a drop-in replacement for USEARCH, you may give it a try.

Any update to this issue? Have you been able to get the 32-bit version to run on Catalina or Big Sur?
