Hello,

I'm sorry if this question has been answered here a million times, and if anyone could redirect me to previous answers, that would be much appreciated!

I'm looking into PhD programs in bioinformatics or computational biology, and I'm wondering which universities are known to have good programs and good mentors? I understand that the ranking of the university overall has little to do with the quality of its bioinformatics program, so I was hoping to gain some insight from the experiences of people on this site.

Thank you so much, and any advice at all is helpful!

As a prospective student, I would ask to take a tour around the lab and even offer to sit in on meetings. It is otherwise impossible to say which programme is better than the next. Granted, a PhD at Harvard or Stanford would reflect better to some, but this is equally a sad reflection on the way that the World functions.

I would actually say that your PhD is what you make of it yourself. I have seen some students who seem to use a PhD to just continue the student life, while others are really leading their own work and are steps ahead of their supervisors.
