The GIGA biomedical research center of the University of Liège is seeking to hire an enthusiastic bioinformatician/computational scientist for an immediately available position.
Established in 2007 at the University of Liège, GIGA is an interdisciplinary research center in biomedical sciences whose mission is advanced medical innovation. The institute encompasses more than 500 members (PI, senior researchers, post-doctoral scientists, thesis students, technicians) with expertise in medical genomics, in silico medicine, neuroscience, oncology, infection and immunity, and cardiovascular sciences. GIGA provides its members access to a broad range of state-of-the-art technologies through core facilities, including genomics, proteomics and imaging platforms (http://www.giga.uliege.be/).
The successful candidate will strengthen the bioinformatic team, working closely with scientists from the GIGA Institute to provide expert support for the analysis of complex high-throughput sequencing data. She/he will also be the link between the GIGA scientists, the SEGI (General IT Department) in charge of the infrastructure support, and the UDI (Decentralized IT unit) of the Faculty of Medicine in charge of the user’s support.
The candidate will assist the GIGA scientists in using informatics tools and infrastructures to solve biological questions and will be involved in:
- Working with and managing big data;
- Using and managing high performance computing clusters;
- Training users on how to use the computing infrastructure as well as on specific tools and languages;
- Ensuring that the rules of usage (IT Policy) are respected;
- Building and applying bioinformatics pipelines in order to analyze high-throughput sequencing data from the newest multi-omics technologies;
- Guiding biologists in analyzing and managing their own data, and setting up support documentation.
Profile
- Bachelor or master degree in bioengineering, computer science, (bio)informatics or related field;
- Working knowledge of Linux systems, bash, Python or Perl, R, and statistics;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- A passion for (bio)informatics and the motivation to work on innovative and ambitious projects in a dynamic team;
- Experience with high-performance computing, data analysis, data visualization and big data management are an asset;
- Flexible, self-motivated, and autonomous with strong analytical and organizational skills;
- Fluent in French and in English.
