Hi guys,

I'm not sure whether this immunology question can get an answer here, but I was wondering what the length of the VDJ segment is in B cells? Is there any way to find this out bioinformatically?

Thanks a lot!

Cheers, Eric

Your question is a little abridged, I cannot even say if its off-topic or not ;) What is a VDJ segment? Most computational people might not know, please explain your acronyms: see How to ask Good Questions on Technical and Scientific Forums

Yes, or the asker can link to further information using markdown tags. [Like this]biostars.org)

A VDJ segment looks like it has to do with some random gene in every immune cell.

Dr. Tipton mentioned some bioinformatics solutions to your question in his Nature immunology paper. You can find the pipeline like this way: enter image description here

You will find all you need to know here (Not sure you meant length of V(D)J before or after recombination)

The length of the VDJ region depends on the :

  • V and J genes as they have different length
  • Number of added nucleotides in CDR3 region
  • Heavy chain has D segment while Light doesnt

Usually the average CDR3 receptor length is calculated for the repertoire: https://docs.milaboratories.com/mixcr/reference/mixcr-postanalysis/#cdr3-metrics
