Hi I have started working on shotgun metagenome analysis for samples collected from plastic landfilling, coal mining areas, and petroleum oil refinery fields. According to the Illumina website, they recommend 24 GB per sample for species-level identification with genome annotation. I need guidance for the raw data requirements for samples collected under these conditions. Your suggestions would be highly appreciated and immensely helpful.

I don't think there is a right/definite answer. You may need to do some test samples and determine the right amount yourself. Species level identification aim seems overly optimistic but may be possible if Illumina's advice is based on other data.
