Exact number can not be given as this has cell type specificity. For example, there are much more non coding RNA and endogenous retroviral elements are expressed during development and in cancers which occupy much proportion of genome in comparison to that of normal differentiated cell types.

Have a look at this paper for some useful numbers: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3422666/

In short, 5-10% of the human genome is transcribed and ~2% is protein coding.

I disagree a bit here. I think that we all need to have a good sense of the sizes and magnitudes because they help us choose the right approaches, provide sanity checks and other estimates. It may not be computing related but it affects computing greatly.

Fair enough.

I am going o move the comment to an answer because the link in there does actually provide all the answers.

OK, I've reformatted it more as an answer and left a note mentioning why there are seeming non sequitor comments.
