Hi Respected forum members,
Kindly allow me to introduce myself. I am an IT personal having an educational background in the area of bioinformatics and interested to contribute towards bioinformatics research community and I find the forum here very useful and active.
I am trying to understand what are the current research topics in the area of Bioinformatics that involves computing and use of computing Infrastructure . I would like to know the challenges that might be faced by you .
Any questions are welcome.
I changed this to Forum because this is mainly an open-ended question, answers will be based on subjective criteria. Also your question is broad, did you mean "current hot topics", "unsolved problems", "intractable problems", "challenges unique to bioinformatics", "organizational challenges in research (e.g. interdisciplinarity, funding)", "challenges of having a career in bioinformatics"?
If you are looking for "unique challenges" then in no way "Big data" is a an answer, even though bioinformatics seem to share some common notion of being proud of "ever faster growing high-throughput/NGS data", but other disciplines (including Google and Facebook) generate larger data volumes by orders of magnitude than NGS.
This article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4494865/ suggests this might change, but it is a projection to the year 2025, and primarily based on the assumption that almost every human has their genome sequenced.
