Dear all,

I have long wondered why Biostars has such restrictive categories (at the top).

Several categories are missing for my taste:

  • mapping
  • epigenomics
  • long reads

Potentially also new categories or misc like single cell, Hi-C, *-seq for exotic sequencing approaches.

Are there any plans to change this ?

Thanks,
Colin

Not sure what you mean by categories? Users are free to create any tags they want (and all those categories you mention are tags) when they create a post. People don't always do that though. All users can follow any tags they are interested in.

e.g. https://www.biostars.org/t/epigenomics/ gets you all threads that have that tag.

I realise that, by categories I mean the clickable links at the very top of the site. Which most users would use I would assume. Thanks for the tip though.

Ah I see. I think those categories are really tags (full list can be seen by clicking ALL here: https://www.biostars.org/t/ ). What you are interested in is a configurable display of things you like up there.

Biostars v. N+ will happen at some point in future and display configurability would be a reasonable feature request. Don't hold your breath though :-D

I actually never use those categories, but it wouldn't be too hard to set a bookmark in your browser for a tag which interests you.
