Is it common that two publications have the same GEO accession code?

Both of them used GSE71585 as accession code.

if they analysed the same dataset, that is possible yes.

if that is not the case there might have been an error/typo indeed.

There are 3 different platforms

GPL13112    Illumina HiSeq 2000 (Mus musculus)
GPL16417    Illumina MiSeq (Mus musculus)
GPL17021    Illumina HiSeq 2500 (Mus musculus)

and 1800+ samples in the GEO accession you listed so it is reasonable for multiple publications to list the same accession.

this looks like a typo and/or incorrect cross linking

the correct accession for the DroNc-seq paper is GSE104525
