Is Bioinformatics a really great field, what do you think of it in the next 20 years?

Converting data from one to another format and repairing gene names turned dates. Yes, great field.

Complaining about format conversions is like a wet biologist complaining about Westerns to prove protein expression. It is tedious and has to be done, but hopefully not the only thing one does. That said, it is a guarantee that 20 years from now we'll be doing both Westerns and file conversions. C'est la vie.

10 years ago brentp told us:

I've been doing bioinformatics for about 10 years now. I used to joke with a friend of mine that most of our work was converting between file formats.

We don't joke about that anymore.

So all in all - that's the last 20 years of bioinformatics

As seen in: Very Bad Things

what do you think of it in the next 20 years?

It will be what people like you make of it (assuming you are just starting out and that is why are asking this question).

Some of us would (hope to) be gone by then.

Famous poet once said:

"We are what we were - and we will become what we are."

The previous generation sets the stage for the next.

I think there will be more data and code management with the development of FAIR tools. But very hard to tell what the new things will be.
